Heartbleed Computer Bug

Earlier this week, security researchers released details of a security vulnerability that exists in the OpenSSL protocol and is known as the Heartbleed Bug. Although just recently discovered, this bug has been around for two years. American National Bank Fox Cities' various core operating platforms and network do not use the OpenSSL protocol and as such, have not been affected by this vulnerability.

American National Bank Fox Cities is aware of the issues and concerns regarding the Heartbleed Bug. The security of our users' information is a top priority and we took immediate action to assess and address the potential vulnerability.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the Heartbleed Bug, here is a quick breakdown:

  • The Heartbleed Bug is a flaw in OpenSSL which is the open-source encryption process used by many sites to secure email, instant messaging and e-commerce. Because of this "bug," the information stored on secured servers could be stolen.
  • This only affects sites using OpenSSL. However, this is also one of the more common means of encryption on the net.
  • There is a fix and affected sites are already installing patches or switching to a different encryption process.
